Short Description
Rybelsus 7mg is an oral tablet form of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is generally used, alongside diet and exercise, to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The 7mg strength is typically the first treatment dose used after an initial 4-week starting period.
What Is Rybelsus 7mg?
Rybelsus 7mg contains semaglutide, a once-daily tablet belonging to a class known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. Unlike most GLP-1 medicines, which are injected, Rybelsus is taken by mouth.
This strength is generally prescribed after an initial 3mg starting dose taken for the first 30 days, which is used to help the body adjust rather than to control blood sugar on its own. Rybelsus is not a form of insulin and is not interchangeable with injectable semaglutide products.
Uses
Rybelsus 7mg may be prescribed to:
Help improve blood glucose (blood sugar) control in adults with type 2 diabetes, used alongside diet and exercise
Help reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, in adults with type 2 diabetes who have known cardiovascular disease
The appropriate treatment and dose should be determined by a healthcare professional based on individual health needs.
How Does Rybelsus Work?
Rybelsus works by mimicking a natural gut hormone called GLP-1. It helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high, reduces the amount of glucagon (a hormone that raises blood sugar) released by the body, and slows down how quickly the stomach empties.
These combined effects generally support better blood sugar control over time. Noticeable changes in blood sugar levels typically develop gradually, and your doctor may check your response after several weeks on this dose.
How to Take Rybelsus
Take Rybelsus exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.
Take one tablet once daily, on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning
Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 4 ounces (about 120mL) of plain water; do not use any other liquid
Wait at least 30 minutes after taking Rybelsus before eating, drinking, or taking any other oral medicines, vitamins, or supplements
Do not split, crush, or chew the tablet
Do not take more than one tablet per day
Do not stop or change your dose without speaking to your healthcare professional first, even if you feel well
Missed dose: If a dose is missed, it should generally be skipped, and the next tablet taken as usual the following day. Do not take two tablets on the same day to make up for a missed dose. Speak with your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure what to do after a missed dose.
Important Safety Information
Before starting Rybelsus, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your full medical history and all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use.
Caution may be needed in people with:
A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
A history of pancreatitis
Diabetic retinopathy
Gallbladder disease
Kidney problems, particularly if experiencing dehydration
Known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any ingredient in Rybelsus
Rybelsus may interact with other medicines, particularly:
Insulin or sulfonylureas (may increase the risk of low blood sugar)
Other oral medicines, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index such as levothyroxine, as Rybelsus can slow stomach emptying and change how they are absorbed; timing around the Rybelsus dose is often important
Always check for possible interactions with a doctor or pharmacist before starting or combining medicines.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Rybelsus is generally not recommended during pregnancy, as animal studies suggest a potential risk to the developing baby and there is limited data in humans; treatment is typically stopped well in advance of a planned pregnancy due to how long the medicine remains in the body. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking Rybelsus, as an ingredient used to help absorption has been found in breast milk and its effects on a nursing infant are not fully known. Anyone who is pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding should speak with their doctor or pharmacist, as recommendations may vary depending on individual circumstances and local guidance.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Rybelsus can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Common side effects may include:
Nausea
Diarrhoea
Decreased appetite
Vomiting
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Seek prompt medical attention for symptoms such as severe or persistent abdominal pain (which may indicate pancreatitis), signs of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing), vision changes, or signs of gallbladder problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes.
This is not a complete list of side effects or warnings. Please refer to the product packaging and patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine for complete information and speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have concerns.
